I am very low income but insured by my estranged husband’s job and pregnant. I can’t afford the OB visits and spouse won’t help and will probably remove me from insurance come open enrollment but that will mean months of visits where I would have to pay cash since my deductible is so high. I’m trying to see if I can qualify for women’s Medicaid or assistance from the state hospital but I’m worried if I tell them I’m (technically) under insurance they’ll deny me. Any advice?

Will a public hospital be able to detect if I have insurance in their system?

Yes they can check, many providers have ways to check with carriers. By law, Medicaid is secondary to any insurance that you have.

You should be able to apply for hospital financial assistance regardless of insurance if its a public or non for profit hospital. I would recommend checking with a hospital financial assistance counselor.
