So I just hit my first car today.

I got a notification from my motion sensor on my security system and got really panicked because the police were calling me telling me my security picked up motion in our house and I had left for the day. I was about to rush home and I bumped the car behind me while backing out. I left a note with my name and phone number and took pictures of my dent and their dent. It was actually a local cleaning company’s car and I even called the number on the car but it’s Sunday so their business is closed. I guess they leave the car in that spot because the logo and number shows up on the side of the road. I felt so bad and I couldn’t just leave and there were cameras in the parking lot. It got dented and scratched on the corner of the bumper.

I have a question. I have State Farm. I’m 29. I have never gotten a ticket or been in accident. I don’t really want to report it.

I’m assuming they will call me tomorrow when they go to work but could I offer to just pay them in cash? Should I Venmo? I would rather not get my insurance involved. Also what if they decide to report me even after I give them cash. There is no trace of me giving them money.

Sorry I have never dealt with this before. Also I’m not sure what the right amount is if they want me to just pay them out of pocket. Thank you!

    1. It’s pretty clear you’re overwhelmed

Save the hundreds of hours of stress and probably thousands of dollars out of your own pocket and just report it to your insurance company to handle

Unless you’re a vehicle damage estimator AND routinely get sued for car accidents for a living, you’re figuring it out as you go along and relying on the honesty of a stranger to stop asking for your money when they’re supposed to.

you basically get one shot at it and if you’re wrong, you either get sued or send money into a black hole and they file a claim anyways lol

    2. You can either A. Report it to insurance or B. Pay OOP. Best way to pay OOP (in my opinion) is pay the shop directly & make the claimant (other party) sign a waiver stating that they cannot/will not go after more $.
