Some time ago I went to an ER. My health insurance is Cigna with a high deductible. Based on the bill I received from the hospital (which also matches the claim details from Cigna), the hospital charges were $1461, but after the adjustment/discounts, the total is now $2054. How is it possible for the total to be more than what the hospital is charging?

I don't think this is wrong, but being relatively young and without much experience dealing with medical billing, I am just asking for the community to help me understand this.

    Bill details:

    Amount Billed $1,461.00

This was the amount that was billed for your visit on xx/xx/xxxx

    Discount $0.00

Cigna negotiates discounts with health care professionals and facilities to help you save money. Using an in-network option is one way you can save. Visit MyCigna.com or call Customer Service to learn more.

What my Cigna plan paid $0.00

Cigna paid $0.00 to XXX HOSPITAL.

    What I Owe $2,054.00

This is the amount you owe after your discount, what your Cigna plan paid, and what your accounts paid. People usually owe because they may have a deductible, have to pay a percentage of the covered amount, or for care not covered by their plan.

ER bill is higher after the adjustments/discounts?
