    1. Just to make sure:

      1. Did you affirmatively call/write to Liberty to let them know you were canceling your policy?
      2. DId you have any unpaid installments or premium past due to Liberty?
      3. Did you call Liberty when you receive your first bill that premium was past due?

      Your post is super vague.

    2. In a nutshell insurance cannot just straight cancel you immediately and deny coverage for late payment in nearly every state and by law in some fashion has to cover you in some fashion during the late payment notice phase I’ll call it. They have to give notice and during that phase they would still be on the hook for claims although special rules can kick in that may tweak the situation

Because of this people who just bounce the bill when they switch get into these situations and in todays market carriers want payment for those days.

Ins simple terms if your going to cancel in or something similar and do it on the day you confirmed you have coverage at the other place.

    3. Sounds like you didn’t actively cancel your policy so it canceled due to non payment. That would mean they were legally obligated to cover any claims by you up to that date your policy canceled, even if that date was after your inception date with the new company. If that’s the case, of course they’re going to bill you for that coverage provided.
