I visited er about a month ago because of a burn. At the time, I believed I had covered California insurance, but not long ago, I found that my family's income was below the new minimum income due to government policy, which at the time my Covered California insurance disappeared and automatically changed to Medi Cal insurance.

So I got about $5,000 in bills and I tried to update my medical insurance, but the hospital told me that they don't take medical insurance… and I have to pay bills by myself.

Currently, I'm still a college student and have no income, and I'm living with my parents. Is there a way to get a partial reduction or pay in installments?

If there's no way, I guess it's a relief that my entire bank account just happens to be $5,000. 😭

After the hospital treatment, I found out that I didn't have insurance. What can I do?

Something isn’t right here. You can contact your insurance and see if they can tell you what to do. What kind of hospital with an emergency room doesn’t take insurance?

    2. When a medical provider does take insurance that doesn’t mean your insurance doesn’t cover some or all of the care you received. It only means the provider will not bill your insurance company. You need to get the bill and call your insurance company and file a claim yourself.

You are responsible for the cost due to the medical provider but your insurance company may reimburse you for some or all of that cost. Don’t let this get you down, just get in touch with your insurance company and take it from there.
