My teen will turn 15.5 next year, and wants to get a learner’s permit as soon as possible. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and my insurance premiums on an almost 5 year Nissan Rogue will be $2000 for the year. This is despite no claims, no tickets.

I am planning to get a new car when my son is 16, and let him drive the old one. I’m assuming that my already high premium will skyrocket with the combination of new car, new driver added to the insurance.

What is the best strategy I can use to try and keep insurance premiums down? Would it help if I bought the new car earlier? I am thinking of getting a plugin hybrid or an EV, if that’s helpful.
