I just hit a bump in the road and could really use some advice. I was the low bidder on a $3 million project, and the other three bids were all super close—within $100k of mine. But I ended up losing the contract because I couldn’t get it bonded.

I’ve been in the construction game for 27 years, but I’m still kinda new to the commercial side. So now I’m wondering what to do next. Here’s what I’m thinking:

    1. Get a partner- Maybe I should find someone who can help with liquidity—either through a loan or selling a few shares of my company. I own a lot of our vehicles and equipment outright, so maybe that could help?

    2. Learn about bonding- I really need to figure out how to secure bonding for future projects. I know it’s a big deal in commercial work, and I want to be ready next time.

    3. Network with other contractors- I’ve heard that getting to know other contractors and bonding agents can be super helpful. Has anyone had luck with this?

    4. Get some training- Thinking about taking some courses or getting certifications related to commercial contracting and bonding. Any recommendations?

I’d love to hear your stories or any tips you have! How did you bounce back after losing a big project? Thanks for any advice!
