Dredgers, tugboats and even a backhoe failed to free a giant cargo ship wedged in Egypt’s Suez Canal on Thursday as the number of stacked-up vessels unable to pass through the vital waterway climbed to 150 and losses to global shipping mounted.

The situation sent new shockwaves through global trade on Thursday as officials stopped all ships entering the channel and the salvage company said it may take weeks to free.

Dutch firm Smit Salvage will likely try to take advantage of the maximum tide levels to pull the stranded vessel way from the bank of the canal but the highest tide is not until March 31, maritime historian Sal Mercogliano said.
