It is an essential part of most mobile gadgets sold around the world and demand for cobalt is soaring. But the process of extracting the mineral from the earth comes at a huge human cost.
A Sky News investigation has found children as young as four working in dangerous and squalid conditions in Cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for as little as 8p a day. Sky’s special correspondent Alex Crawford reports.

Nobody cares. I’m literally holding cobalt in my hands right now. What choice do I have? Give me a safe and responsibly made product and I’ll buy that. But my government is involved and so I have no choice. Go see them about it. But they don’t care so we should be like them. Uncaring and greedy. All these mines are owned by the Chinese let that sink in. None of these riches ever reach the country of their origin in the Congo. The youngest miners are 4 years old. This just reminds me of Danny archers words from blood diamond. Sometimes I think will god ever forgive us for what we have done to each other? And then I look around and I realise that god left this place a long time ago.

This is another reason why we should not support electric cars. Mining for these materials degrades the environment and destroys people's lives. It's enough that we need cobalt and other rare earth minerals for cell phones and computers. Pay men a decent wage and let them mine responsibly.
