The Suez Canal authorities announced today that a tugboat collided with a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker flying the Hong Kong flag and sank on this strategically important waterway. It is currently unclear whether canal traffic has been affected.

According to a statement by Osama Rabie, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), as reported by Reuters, the LPG tanker named “Chinagas Legend” is currently waiting at Port Said until the relevant investigation procedures are completed. The vessel has not been damaged in the collision and is operating normally, currently anchored at Port Said.

Rabie stated that the tugboat named “Fahd” had a crew of seven people, and rescue operations are currently underway. A crane has been deployed to salvage the sunken vessel.

Two other sources revealed that six crew members from the tugboat have been rescued and are receiving medical treatment, while the whereabouts of the seventh crew member are still unknown.

Reportedly, the “Chinagas Legend” tanker departed from Singapore and was en route to the United States. The vessel measures 230 meters in length, 36 meters in width, and carries 52,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
