America Humiliated the Japan in their defeat like no one else did in the whole history During WW2
PT boats belonging to the United States
Navy battle Japanese warships that are
attempting to reach the assault Peaches
on the island of Le in the Philippines
while the action is taking place in
surgo Street this piece of artwork was
created by Dwight sheppler an American
Military
artist in the field of Naval History
during the Battle of Shugo Strait a
Japanese task force was completely
destroyed by a line of American
battleships that had been rebuilt from
the mud of Pearl Harbor on October 24
1944 at 2:43 p.m. rear Admiral Jesse B
oldendorf received a message from vice
admiral Thomas C King kite who was the
commander of the central Philippines
Attack
Force this was one day before the Battle
of surgo Street the message was
uncomplicated and
straightforward get ready for a night
engagement and it was appropriately
recorded on Olden dorf’s Flagship the
powerful Cruiser Us
Louisville the order did not come as a
surprise to Admiral oldendorf who was in
charge of the fire support warships that
were deployed during the elite
Invasion the knowledge that a Japanese
force was heading into the Le Gulf was
previously known to Naval intelligence
which had been informed of the
situation Admiral oldendorf a stocky man
with a pleasant personality was assigned
a task of intercepting Japanese Naval
Force sea which was under the command of
vice admiral Shoji nishimura during the
height of the battle of Lee Gul during
the morning of that particular day Nish
shimura’s task force was discovered by
planes from the carriers Enterprise and
Franklin a second work group was seen a
little less than 3 hours after the first
one during this time vice admiral Koh
haima was in charge of the number two
striking
force on the previous day the
submarine’s daughter and Dace had
successfully successfully intercepted
the main Force which was known as the
first striking force and was led by vice
admiral Tako
K the three Japanese task groups were
supposed to meet up at the lead Gulf
with kid coming in from the north and
nishimura and Shima coming in from the
south they were supposed to launch an
assault on the American transports and
their escorts off the coast of the
Philippine island of Le which was where
American forces deployed under the
command of General doublas MacArthur had
landed on October 20 the three task
groups would arrive at late Gulf at
Daybreak on October 25 if all went
according to the Japanese plan they
would then proceed to syn the American
Support ships that were located off the
coast of Le and isolate the American
troops that were stationed on the island
Admiral oldendorf chose to block suro
Strait as his best line of action after
receiving the order to prepare for a
night combat he believed that this would
be the most effective way to proceed
oldendorf had the intention of
establishing a battle line squarely
across the lead exit of the straight
which would prevent the Japanese from
entering the lead Gulf the Northern end
of the straight goes into the lead Gulf
on the other side more moreover he had a
sufficient number of vessels at his
disposal to carry out the plan that he
had
conceived it was the Aging battleships
Mississippi Maryland West Virginia
Tennessee California and Pennsylvania
that formed the core of olden’s
Frontline of
Defense with the exception of
Mississippi all of them were Veterans of
the attack on Pearl Harbor and they had
either been sunk or severely damaged by
the Japanese
the opportunity to respond to the praise
was about to be presented to them at
this point the remainder of the American
Force was comprised of at least 28
destroyers including the hmas Aruna four
light Cruisers and four heavy
Cruisers among the heavy Cruisers was
the Australian hmas
shoper Samuel Elliot morison a historian
made the observation that this was more
than enough to take care of the Japanese
Southern
Force the Japanese Navy was Notorious
for its deadly night torpedo strikes an
Olden dorf intended to overwhelm the
adversary with greater numbers in order
to prevent them from
success a comment was made by him that
stated we did not want them to pull
another savoo Island on us in August of
1942 American and Japanese warships
engaged in a battle off the coast of gu
camp
known as the Battle of Sabo
Island this battle was considered to be
one of the most humiliating defeats in
the history of the United States Allied
Cruisers as well as four Naval vessels
had been sunk during this particular
instance there was no room for error
there was not much complexity to Admiral
oldendorf
strategy at the beginning each and every
PT boat that was available would be
stationed at the southern entrance to
serve go Street when night fell there
would be 39 PT boats on patrol in the
street their orders were to notify the
approach of the enemy and to launch
Torpedoes as a means of attack the
Torpedoes of the warships would then
launch an assault on the victim
following this the Cruisers and
battleships would begin firing their
large caliber guns at the adversary once
they were within range of the enemy the
ancient battleships fusso and and
Yamashiro The Heavy Cruiser Mami and
four destroyers with the names machio
yamago asumo and shigar were the members
of Admiral nishimura Force C this force
was going to move northward toward the
lead Gulf both Fuso and Yamashiro were
commissioned during World War I Fuso was
commissioned in
1915 and Yamashiro was commissioned in
1917
despite the fact that neither of them
had participated in any Naval Combat
both of them were
commissioned both ships were rebuilt in
the 1930s with the addition of armor
protection new boilers and other
upgrades but despite these advancements
both were still regarded as being too
old and slow to play an active role in
the
fleet however after the attack on Pearl
Harbor warships were required in order
to engage in combat with the unit United
States it was decided to call Futo and
Yamashiro back from their training
duties in the Inland sea which they had
been
performing both during the Battle of
Midway and during the reinforcement of
Tru in
1943 fusso was a member of the uan force
that participated in the
conflict however despite the fact that
Nish shimura’s force was significantly
weaker than the American Fleet that it
would be confronting as Admiral
oldendorf was not going to show any
leancy if my opponent is foolish enough
to come at me with an inferior Force he
declared later I’m certainly not going
to give him an even
break additionally one of his Destroyer
Squadron commanders Captain J coward had
defeated the Japanese in a nighttime
encounter off the coast of
guenel he was well aware of the
capabilities that the Japanese possessed
in terms of their long Lance torpedo and
night tactics and he was not going to
allow them to accomplish the same thing
at Sero Street at 10:36 minutes passed
midnight on the evening of October 24
the crew of PT 100 and 31 detected Nish
shimura’s group on
radar a total of 14 minutes later visual
contact was achieved it was around 2
minutes after this that the Destroyer
shigure became aware of the PT boats and
immediately commenced firing one of the
shells struck the
pt30 but it did not explode during the
maximum speed the captain of the boat
suffered contact with the other vessel
and sent his contact report the
information was delivered to Admiral
oldendorf who was already aboard the
Louisville shortly after midnight on
October
25 every single PT Squadron that was
stationed in the street went through to
the same series of events they made
contact with the Enemy at which point
they typically sent a contact report
they fired Torpedoes that were
unsuccessful they came under Fire from
Japanese destroyers and finally they
retired behind a smoke screen the
progress of the P2 reports was closely
monitored by Admiral oldendorf and it
was determined that he did not need to
make any adjustments to his battle plan
when they were completed
15 of the vessels that were subjected to
fire were destroyed and one of them was
sunk a total of 20 people were injured
and three people were killed Admiral
nishimura continued to move northward
toward the lead Gulf paying no mind the
strikes that were being launched by the
PT the second time he came into touch
with the adversary was at 3: in the
morning when he came across the seven
destroyers that were part of Destroyer
Squadron 54 which was led by C Captain
Jess coward a notification of an unknown
contact had already been received by
Captain coward at 240 in the morning it
was quickly determined that the contact
was a group of ships heading in the
direction of the North after realizing
that his 5-in guns would be ineffectual
against huge enemy vessels coward gave
the order for his destroyers to launch
an attack using only Torpedoes
exclusively the four destroyers
belonging of Admiral nisha’s column were
taking the lead followed by Yamashiro
Fuso and Mami in that order two distinct
groups were formed by the Destroyer
Squadron
54 it was decided that Melvin mcowan and
Remy would launch their assault from the
East while Monson and mcdermid would
approach from the West at approximately
30 knots Captain coward who was on board
Remy closed with nishimura ships causing
smoke to be
produced it was at 258 that he swung his
destroyers to the left bringing torpedo
tubes to bear and then he gave the
command fire when ready Remy Melvin and
McGowan started firing their Torpedoes
and they fired 27 of them in
approximately 75 seconds it would take
them around 8 minutes to finish their
runs which ranged from
8,200 to 9,000 300 yard in
length coward made a sharp turn to port
on a base course of
21° the three destroyers zigzagging
separately and producing
smoke this occurred after all of the
Torpedoes had been used up within the
ship it was determined that none of the
American warships were
damaged surprisingly Admiral nishimura
did not take any evasive action despite
the fact that he must have been aware
that the American Destroyers had fired
Torpedoes at his column The Men Who were
aboard the Destroyers that belonged to
coward witnessed a number of
explosions after a few minutes had
passed a somewhat large ship in the
column slowed down and started turning
slowly to the starboard side despite the
fact that the battleship fusso had been
struck by a torpedo fired from the
Melvin Admiral nishimura continued to
issue orders to fusso as if the ship had
not been damaged
during the time that Captain coward’s
division was retreating the Destroyers
McDermot and Monson continued to move in
the direction of the South without
stopping Commander Richard H Phillips
who was in charge of the Destroyer
division made a turn toward the port in
order to get into firing position he
then swung his two destroyers back on a
track that was heading south later on he
gave the order for the Torpedoes to be
launched when they were ready both
mcdermit and Monson started firing
immediately with Monson coming in at
311 it is true that Admiral nishimura
made an attempt to take evasive measures
this time he turned 90° to starboard
then 90° to Port but this did not take
him away from the
Torpedoes at 3 minutes and 20 seconds
flashes from explosions that occurred
among nishim Mur ships were seen on both
Destroyers
Monson was illuminated by a search Light
Beam which most likely originated from
one of the Japanese
destroyers shell splashes occurred
almost soon after and some of them were
of such close proximity that Columns of
water soaked the AFT Cannons of both the
Monson and the mcdermid Weapons
Systems as they shifted their course and
accelerated their speed the Destroyers
produced smoke both the search light
beam and the shells that were exploding
vanished simult
mously there were a total of 47
Torpedoes carried out by Destroyer
Squadron 54 they had scored at least
three hits according to Captain coward
who was certain of this fact as a matter
of fact five of the torpedos had
successfully hit their targets which led
to the destruction of three hostile
vessels the torpedo Salvo fired by
mcdermit was responsible for the
destruction of not one but three
Destroyers yagumo machio and
asago asago had her bow blown off but
was still able to make progress yamag
gumo blew up and sank mishio was
severely damaged and drifting and would
sink in a short amount of time despite
the fact that Melvin’s hit on Futo would
prove to be fatal Monson was able to
score a hit on
Yamashiro which allowed him to continue
steaming along the the
course on the other hand the assault of
the Destroyers was not yet finished
additionally Destroyer Squadron 24 which
was commanded by Captain K mcmains
navigated the straight in two halves and
headed south in the first section
Hutchin Dy and Baki were the members
while in the second section kilan Beal
and hmas Aruna were the
members Commander AE bu Canan of the
royal Australian Navy was there when
Captain mcmains issued the command boil
up at 317 that afternoon smolder It Up 2
minutes later the Destroyer gamma gumo
exploded having already been hit by one
of mcdermid’s
torpedoes please let me know when you
have fired the captain said as Commander
banan made his escape the light that
emanated from the explosion proved to be
of immense assistance to him although
the torpedoman may have been able to see
their targets more clearly because to
the heat from yam mago’s burning wreck
it did not assist them hit their
targets a total of four Torpedoes were
fired by a Renta from a distance of
6,500 y every single one of them failed
at a distance of
6,800 yards be launched five
Torpedoes these were also not taken into
account in a more
fortunate turn of events kilan was able
to fire five Torpedoes at Yamashiro and
struck her once kilan Skipper Commander
HG Corey had been present at Pearl
Harbor and must have taken great Delight
in torpedoing one of the enemy’s
battleships to the point of Destruction
only for a brief period of time the
ship’s speed was reduced to 5 knots as a
result of the second torpedo strike on
Yamashiro despite this the sturdy old
battle wagon continued to make progress
and gradually regained its speed
additionally pins daily and back the
three destroyers under Captain mcm’s
command were traveling south at a speed
of 25 knots they started firing
Torpedoes at 3:29 in the afternoon it
was about this point that Admiral
nishimura clean coling had completely
crumbled
at a speed of approximately 15 knots
Yamashiro continued to advance
relentlessly toward the north both
shigar and mogami who had not sustained
any injuries spread out on the starboard
side of her vessel the remaining
destroyers including Fuso were either
moving with the current or attempting to
go in the opposite direction toward the
South because of this the shooting was
significantly more challenging than
Captain coward had ever
encountered Nish shimura’s force or what
was left of it was the target of a total
of 15 Torpedoes which were fired by
mcm’s
destroyers additionally Bachi Unleashed
fire with her 5in guns on the Japanese
destroyers that had been destroyed and
Hutchin and Dy joined her in this
endeavor in response the adversary fired
back an imprecise shot of its own during
the time that this conversation was
going Place everyone’s attention was
diverted by the recent events that
occurred with
Fuso according to reports the strike by
Melvin’s torpedo or maybe two torpedos
had sparked internal Flames that her
damage control parties were unable to
put out of their way it wasn’t long
until the fire spread to one or more of
the primary
magazines it was at 3:38 when the
battleship suffered a huge shock and
exploded causing it to break in half
on both sides Sailors were present to
observe the event in addition to being
enormous the explosion was rendered even
more impressive by the absence of a moon
during the night both the bow and the
stern continued to float gradually
moving away from one another as they
drifted apart at 420 the forward section
began to descend and the two sections
continued to drift in the same
direction after less than an hour had
passed the stern capsized toward the
same time that mcm’s destroyers started
to pull back Hutchin fired her five
remaining Torpedoes toward
Asuma mishio which had wandered into the
path of the spread was hit by one of the
five bullets while the other four missed
their target as soon as it exploded Mish
plummeted to the bottom Admiral
oldendorf ships had completely subverted
the Japanese superiority in night torpo
assaults which had Afflicted American
forces at godal canel two years
earlier these attacks had been a source
of difficulty for the American
forces the United States destroyers did
not sustain any casualties as a result
of the fight it was not yet time for
Destroyer Squadron 56 which was
commanded by Captain orence mot to
engage the
adversary the Japanese force was still
moving in a Northerly Direction toward
oldendorf battle line and any additional
Destroyer Attack would have to be Swift
in order to avoid the battleships and
cruisers opening fire on them Smoot was
given the order to launch an attack at
3:45 even before mcmains started his run
the order read get the big boys
Destroyer Squadron 56 in contrast to the
other squadrons was formed into three
sections before it was deployed with
newom Richard P ly and Albert W Grant as
members of section one Captain Smooths
served as the section’s leader Bryant
Hartford and Robinson were the members
of section two for Captain TF colney who
was in charge of the section benan Luth
and Hew would L Edwards were the members
of Section 3 which was commanded by
Commander J do
bware at a speed of 25 knots all nine
destroyers steaming in in the south at 3
minutes and 54 seconds the three
destroyers belonging to KY were the
first to establish contact with the
Enemy Group which was now comprised of
Yamashiro Mami and shigar they then
started firing
Torpedoes there were five Torpedoes
fired by each Destroyer but they were
all
unsuccessful after it came the section
on bull Weare Yamashiro and shigir were
the targets of this attack the two
Japanese ships started fire
simultaneously with the launch of the
Torpedoes by the
Destroyers and they continued firing
even as bull Weare ships fled toward the
north while concealed by a smoke cover
there were no hits scored by either team
it was at a distance of
6,200 Y that Captain sw’s division
started firing
Torpedoes three Torpedoes were launched
by ly while Grant and newcom each
launched
5 a few minutes earlier Yamashiro had
changed its trajectory by 90° going from
North to West and crossing the torpedo
tracks in a direct manner it was seen
that there were two explosions on board
the Yamashiro at 411 which corresponds
to the amount of time that would have
been required for newcomes torpedos to
complete their run as a result of the
fact that Yamashiro had already been
subjected to fire from old URF battle
line
changes in strategy were
necessary the Destroyers were being
bombarded by shellfire from both
Japanese and American ships at this
point in time it was possible to make
out some of the shells against the pitch
black sky as they ared
overhead these shells began to light in
the dark in spite of the fact that they
were surrounded by Falling shots liry
and newom were both able to escape the
crossfire the luck was not as good for
Albert B Grant it was just as she was
about to begin her turn that the
Destroyer sustained her first hit she
was given an additional 18 for the
subsequent 13
minutes 11 of these were shells
measuring 6 in in diameter and were
taken from American
warships at 4:20 she had already passed
away in the sea messes tables and
everything else that was available were
used by the team to cover the holes in
the shell
a wall booat was used to transport
newcom’s medical officer and two
corpsmen to Grant at approximately 5 in
the
morning at that time 94 members of The
Destroyer crew had been injured and 34
officers and men had been killed the
captain of Grant’s ship a large and
strong man descended to the lower deck
and forcibly extracted six Sailors from
the engine room that was
underwater after after almost an hour
had passed newon with Grant and to
dragged her out of the area where the
battle was taking place after being
repaired the Destroyer went on to take
part in the okoa campaign during the war
during the time that the Destroyers were
launching their torpedo strikes Admiral
Olden dorf’s battle line and the
Cruisers that flanked it waited for
nishimura group to get into range of
their weapons the explosions that
occurred as a result of the torpedo hits
in addition to the eruption of Fuso were
visible to anyone who was a top any of
the Cruisers or
battleships at
3:23 radar screens started picking up
pictures of the
adversary over the course of the
Northern end of Shugo Street the
battleships and cruisers had been
maneuvering in a back and forth east to
west Direction
simultaneously at 3:30 they were all
heading in an easterly Direction and
were close to the West western edge of
the straight 2 minutes after that
oldendorf gave the order for the
Cruisers to begin firing and then 21
minutes after that the battleships
joined in at least from the perspective
of the United States the event should
have been a textbook exercise from the
naval war
College the fleet of Admiral nishimura
which consisted of only three ships at
this point one Battleship one Heavy
Cruiser and one Destroyer
continued to move in the direction of
the north the ships that formed the
horizontal stroke were able to bring all
of their weapons to bear on the opponent
while the ships that formed the
downstroke could only fire their
forward-facing cannons at the
adversary oldendorf was ready to cross
the te which is a classic Naval maneuver
Tennessee West Virginia and California
were the only American battleships that
possessed MCH 8 Fire Control radar
giving them an advantage over the
field an accurate shooting solution was
generated by the Gunnery computer using
the radar data which included the
opponent’s distance speed and course
this occurred before the enemy ships
even arrived into range of the Gunnery
computer due to the fact that the ships
have been responsible for bombarding
enemy Shore installations and were
carrying a very small number of armor
piercing shells there was a relatively
limited quantity of
ammunition meanwhile Yamashiro continued
to fire at Denver Columbia and other
Left Flank Cruisers while maintaining a
course of 20° and a speed of 12
knots because it lacked any kind of Fire
Control radar the battleship was only
able to fire at Targets that were
visible to the crew when compared to Old
Endor battleships the Cruisers were more
visible and closer to the ground shell
splash were positioned with Denver
Columbia and Minneapolis in the middle
of the area an equally deadly fire was
returned by the Cruisers and battleships
that were in the area all of the shells
ranging in size from 6 in to 16 in Came
Crashing Down in the local neighborhood
of Yamashiro and Mami
simultaneously according to the words of
one analyst this was Modern War at Sea
they fired at something they couldn’t
see and it fired back in reality
Yamashiro and mogami were firing at the
Cruisers and withdrawing destroyers and
the only thing they were able to strike
was the unfortunate Albert Val Grant the
concussion that was caused by the large
cannons was dizzying for those who were
on board the battleships of both
navies every time the Salvo was fired
the ship was rocked by The Recoil and it
appeared as though it was being pushed
to the side in addition to causing
rivets to fly out of the bulkheads the
blast from the weapons caused the body
to be suffocated without
breathing more than
1,600 mph was the speed at which shells
that weighed roughly a ton heatr launch
from
muzzles massive clouds of smoke
containing cordate caused the eyes to
burn and became lodged in the throat in
spite of the fact that flashless powder
was being utilized muzzle flashes
continued to illuminate each ship on
this pitch black night the smoke was
clean as a result of an easterly Breeze
which was a significant assistance for
visual spotting and
observation the state of West Virginia
fired a total of 93 rounds of armor
piercing shells measuring 16 in while
the states of Tennessee in California
fired 69 and 63 rounds of 14-in
ammunition
respectively the mech 3 radar aboard the
other three battleships was a
significant obstacle for them because it
was significantly less successful than
the make 8 radar in locating targets
which led to a significant reduction in
the number of rounds
fired the fire control system in
Maryland was able to locate Yamashiro by
ranging on the splashes that were
produced by West Virginia’s shells the
state fired a total of 48 rounds
there was only one Salvo fired by
Mississippi and Pennsylvania did not
fire a single shot throughout the entire
night at 3:51 Denver started firing at
Yamashiro who was located on the Left
Flank of the American
Army rapidly joining in were the cities
of Minneapolis Colombia and Portland
during the course of 18 minutes Colombia
alone fired 1,147
rounds which is equivalent to a 12-gun
salvo every 12 seconds at 3 minutes and
58 seconds Portland changed fire to Mami
while Denver attempted to stop shigar
but most likely hit Albert W Grant
instead Yamashiro was the target of the
Cruisers that were stationed on the
right flank every 15 seconds on average
Phoenix would fire complete salvos of 18
guns against the enemy even though boys
had also gone to Rapid Fire they were
given the instruction to fire slow and
deliver it in order to preserve
ammunition following a course adjustment
that led it to begin a Westerly run
across the street the Australian Cruiser
TR Shire began firing gently but then
increased its rate of fire to fast the
total number of shots fired by these
ships was
1,181 due to the fact that they saw
enormous bright flashes on
Yamashiro the spotters felt that their
own Firepower was the cause of the
incident during the time that his
destroyers were retreating Captain Smoot
was in a position to observe this
impressive
performance the devastating accuracy of
this gunfire was the most beautiful
sight I have ever witnessed he recounted
later it was something I will never
forget a continuous stream of railroad
cars passing over a hill appeared to be
the appearance of the arching line of
tracers that was visible in the darkness
in the beginning there was no target
that could be seen nevertheless in a
short period of time there would be
fires and explosions and another ship
would make an
appearance the message that the
Destroyers Albert W Grant and others
were being hit by friendly fire was
received by Admiral oldendorf while he
was aboard the
Louisville at 49 he issued an order for
All Ships to cease firing without
interruption the objective of oldendorf
was to provide the Destroyers with
sufficient time to evacuate the battle
area but he also made sure to allow
nishima some Breathing Room Yamashiro
made a
180° shift and started moving Southward
in his retirement even though she had
suffered deadly wounds the battleship
was still able to maintain a speed of 15
knots despite the damage that she had
taken in spite of the fact that there
are no records that can provide an
accurate count of the number of shell
impacts that had pierced yamashiro’s
armor a reasonable estimate would be
several hundred at 419 the large ship
capsized and sank after rolling over the
majority of the crew including nishimura
perished along with the ship the Mami
had already started to retreat and at
353
he made a detour to the South as she
worked her way out of the straet she
came under attack from Cruisers and
destroyers belonging to the United
States Navy it was 353 when mogami was
already on fire and continuing to take
hits an explosion on the bridge caused
by a shell most likely from Portland
occurred at 42 taking the lives of all
of the officers including the captain as
a result of additional damage to the
engine room she drowned to a halt at 4
minutes and 1 second she fired
Torpedoes however it is likely that she
did this as a safety measure to prevent
the Torpedoes from
explode mami’s torpedo Salvo undoubtedly
had the effect of drawing the attention
of the Americans regardless of the
reasons behind it at 4:13 the Destroyer
Richard P ly which was traveling in the
direction of the battle line reported
that torpedo were approaching her from
the north with their Sterns facing away
from the approaching Torpedoes the
battleships West Virginia Maryland and
Tennessee made a sharp turn to the north
while the other three battleships headed
in the opposite direction toward the
west at 4:19 oldendorf issued an order
for All Ships to continue shooting but
the battleships were already completely
out of
position despite this it was of little
consequence because there were no
targets left to pursue both Mami and
shigar were too far away and Yamashiro
had already fallen To The Ground by this
point Mami had sustained such severe
damage that it was no longer a threat
and shigar was well on his way out of
the fight
area however vice admiral shima’s second
striking Force had not yet made its
existence known to the public among the
ships that comprised shima’s for Force
were the Destroyers chanu Kumi usio and
akono as well as the two heavy Cruisers
Nashi and
ashigara the light Cruiser abukuma was
also a part of the force Shimla had been
receiving reports from nishimura as he
continued approach the straight during
the entirety of the night action the
news that nishimura was being assaulted
by torpedo boats was delivered to him at
midnight in the form of a communicate
a little over an hour later his leading
destroyers were able to observe muzzle
flashes coming from the direction of the
gunfire it was approximately 3:15 when
torpo boats launched an assault on the
seven vessels there were no hits
recorded a further torpedo fired by a PT
Boat struck the abukuma 10 minutes later
causing around 30 men to lose their
lives and causing the cruiser to slow
down to a speed of 10 knots she was luck
took a turn for the worse in reality the
captain of the PT Boat had been going
for a destroyer in the column when he
accidentally hit abukuma rather than the
Destroyer unfazed Shima set out in the
direction of the North in the vicinity
of 410 he observed two ships that were
Ablaze and came to the conclusion that
they must be fto and
Yamashiro in point of fact they were the
pieces of Futo that were drifting in the
bow and Stern Shima hurriedly headed
north in order to provide assistance to
nishimura around 420 minutes after
nishimura and Yamashiro were both
destroyed shima’s radar picked up what
seemed to be two hostile ships at a
distance of 13,000 yard and a bearing of
25° each of Nashi and ashigara were
responsible for firing eight Torpedoes
at the targets it turned out that the
two hiusan islands were the ships that
were hostile nishimura had not been
heard from for a considerable amount of
time and Shima made an effort to assess
the situation on his own it was simply
speculation on his part as to what had
transpired with
nishimura after venturing forward of the
Cruisers his four destroyers were unable
to locate any Targets instead they were
able to uncover only a smoke screen that
appeared to be impen able which had been
left in place by American
destroyers at 4:25 minutes past the hour
Shima called back his destroyers and
dispatched a message to the headquarters
in Manila which said this Forest has
completed its attack and is retiring
from the battle area to plan subsequent
action in comparison to nishimura
Admiral Shima had demonstrated a greater

wrecked and appeared to be already dead
in the water Mami on the other hand had
not stopped from what I could see she
was heading south at a speed that was so
slow that it was virtually
crawling both the speed and the distance
of mogami were overestimated by the
captain of Nashi which resulted in the
collision between the two ships at
4:30 Nai lost part of her Port bow in

to 18 knots Mami joined up with shima’s
column and headed Southward out of the

During World War II, there were many intense naval battles. The Battle of Surigao Strait stands out as a key time when the US Navy dealt a major blow to the Japanese forces. As the story starts, Japanese battleships are stopped by the US Navy, which wants to stop them from moving toward the attack beaches on the Philippine island of Leyte.
The American troops, led by Rear Admiral Jesse B. Oldendorf, planned ahead to block the Surigao Strait because they knew the Japanese were going to attack. This narrow path was very important for the Japanese to get to Leyte Gulf and attack the American troops that were stationed there. Oldendorf got ready for a fight at night against the Japanese with an impressive fleet of destroyers and cruisers as well as some old battleships.
As Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura’s task force came closer to the strait, American PT boats that were already there noticed them. The PT boats fought the enemy and sent important information to Oldendorf during a series of battles. The American PT boats were outnumbered and outgunned, but they were still able to bother the Japanese force and slow them down.
Under the leadership of Captain Jesse Coward, the American destroyers attacked the Japanese ships with torpedoes as the night went on. Even though they were under heavy fire from the enemy, the American destroyers were able to land several hits that did a lot of damage to the Japanese ships. At the same time, Admiral Oldendorf’s main group of battleships and cruisers was waiting for the Japanese to arrive. The American ships engaged the enemy successfully by using advanced radar technology and firing a devastating barrage of weapons. The Japanese tried to fight back, but the American fleet’s better techniques and stronger weapons made it impossible for them to succeed.
After a number of fierce battles, the Japanese battleship Yamashiro and several other ships were sunk by the American forces’ constant attacks. The United States Navy won the Battle of Surigao Strait by a large margin. They stopped the Japanese fleet’s progress and caused them to suffer heavy losses.
The Battle of Surigao Strait not only showed how skilled and determined the US military forces were, but it also changed the course of the Pacific Theater of World War II. It showed how well naval techniques work and how important it is to have better technology in modern war.
