Hi I'm a UT resident living outside UT on AD orders. This dealer says he's getting me out of sales tax with this letter stating my situation, my LES, etc but per our research UT requires sales tax be collected at the time of sale, by the dealer, for vehicles being registered in Utah. Is my reading wrong or is this guy making us think we're getting a deal but we are just gonna pay for it at tax time? Any Utah residents out there?

Utah resident here (also AD stationed out of state).

As far as I understand, your dealer is correct. Because you are military, and you don’t live in Utah, and the vehicle is not being used in Utah, and any sales tax from the transaction wouldn’t be collected by the Utah Tax Commission, the dealer should just be submitting a Utah Title Application. The Utah title application is required for you to be able to register the car.

Assuming you are financing, the dealer will actually hold the title in a trust and you will not receive title until your loan is paid off.

I would contact the DMV in Utah. The one in Ogden is extremely helpful with answering questions.
