Yesterday while I was parked at work, someone hit my brand new truck and left. The parking lot is private for employees and covered in security cameras. I've already filed a police report and am in the process of opening an investigation through my employer.

My question is if I should contact my insurance company now (I have full coverage) or wait for the investigation and see if they catch the person?

    1. Call insurance and provide them with the police report, it is their job to follow up with the perpetrator when they are caught and get their money back from them. Your job is to get whole, which is why you pay for insurance.

    2. Do you want your truck fixed now? I assume you’d have collision on it. If you want it fixed now just file a claim with your insurance and they’ll take care of everything minus your deductible. Depending on state UMPD could come into play. Or you can wait, days, maybe weeks for your employer’s investigation and have the potential of not being able to identify the person or, even if identified, having their insurance deny your claim, which would out you back to square 1 with your insurer. Because of that, I suggest using your own coverage.

Do you have uninsured motorist coverage? That’s the insurance that covers hit and runs.

Go through your insurance. You likely have a clause in your policy that will mandate you to report all accidents to them anyways. It’s better to do that now and allow them to do all the work, especially given that most policies give you a strict reporting deadline.

    5. If you have collision coverage on your own policy I would suggest using it. You may not be able to get camera footage from your employer unless an attorney is involved. You’ll be responsible for your deductible and your insurance may be able to get it back from the responsible party if the police find any information about them.
