I bought out my leased car that was cosigned between me and my dad. When we got the title, it was only registered to his name but since we lived in the same household, we just kept insuring under his name and didn't update the registration. But now, I want to update the registration and maybe get my own insurance just so I can have complete control of the car.

Currently we're insured under a single auto policy for 3 cars, and for NY, I believe the registration and insurance has to match. If that's the case, when I change the registration to my name, I won't be able to be on my parent's insurance right? But I don't know when the registration and title will come to me because they say it'll take 3 or so months to mail it out but it comes in two weeks. Is there a grace period or do I even need to worry about this at all?

How do I deal with car insurance (family bundled) when I’m switching registration from parent to me?

Once the car is registed in your name, you have to be the one that insures it. There is no grace period. Make sure you sign up for insurance and get everything finalized/started before you actually register the car in your name. The easiest way to do this is likely to find out what insurance carrier you are going with and signing up with them. Then, on the day of or the day before coverage starts, register the car in your name.

If the car is being sold/gifted to you, you should also be able to buy a temporary registration, which would also be valid for you to begin insurance with. I am not sure what you mean by needing two to three weeks for registration/title coming back. Once you own the car, you own the car and can register it. You don’t have to have a title to insure a car, but you do have to be the owner.
