Next week I’m submitting my two weeks and I’m insanely stressed about it. Long story short, my best friend is very well off and seasoned in starting and running businesses and after many years and conversations he has decided to invest in the hopes to make me become successfully self employed. There will be a financial payoff for him as well of course.

On my free time I have been working on starting a concrete delivery company from the ground up. It seems now that all the foresee and unforeseen obstacle are out of the way and I can officially become operational by next month. Due to this, my wife and I have decided I should submit my 2 weeks with my current employer so that I can shift all my focus and energy into ensuring things start smoothly and so that I have more time for networking and B2B.

I have spent most of my life in the military and since then I have only had 1 job that I have held for a few years now. I didn’t complete college until I was 30 (after the military), I have a mortgage, and my wife is 4 months pregnant. My friend has financed this whole endeavor and will be using his experience and network to assist where he can but he also has his own businesses to run and has made it clear that it will either succeed or fail with me. I have no doubt in my abilities to run, manage, and grow this business to be successful but my god is this intimidating. I’ve never experienced something like it tbh. My biggest stressor is making sure I don’t let my business partner or my family down. Any advice to keep my head on straight until I get into a productive and prosperous routine?

    Thanks!

Absolutely terrified about becoming an entrepreneur.

First of all, you decided to start it at the worst and best time possible, congrats. Having a baby and people dependant on you would be a driving factor for sure.

The only way to keep your head straight is to work on the business and to have higher than normal self-esteem. **It’ll work out** this should be the only though in your mind, stress is normal and will increase, just know it’ll work out.

Edit: Don’t listen to anyone. Be confident

Can you not start the business while still working full time? And then you can see how it goes?

Hey, well done. You’ve done something that 95% of people will never do.

Hell it’s scary at first. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong, it just means you’re up for the fight. Worst case scenario, you can always get another job!

Sounds like you’re doing great. You have contacts, a plan, experience….

Nah, you’re good to go. Wish you all the best.

The only advice I give everyone… Be kind to yourself, do good business fairly, and enjoy it.

    4. Quitting your job is terrifying.  I set a date months in advance so I could mentally prepare and talk myself into it.

I also have toddlers and a brand new mortgage.  It’s really hard.  But if not now, when?  In hindsight i regret not doing this pre-kids.

I’m someone that stresses all the time so I’ve just been one giant ball of stress this first year.

But like someone else already said– it’ll all work out!  You have to embrace the uncertainty and just accept the fact that you are taking a huge risk and have no idea what you’re doing!
