What was your experience like if you did? Did you struggle to get the capital to actually open your business? And did you do it all on your own or partner with somebody? Would you recommend testing out a normal job first or no

I’m about to be a junior getting my degree in consumer behavior. Most people go into marketing with that degree at my school, but I’ve realized I don’t want to slave away for the man. However it feels incredibly daunting to take on a business at 22.

Did you pursue starting a business immediately out of college? Is that common?

    1. Almost every business student has these thoughts. The problem is, unless you come from family money or a family business, you have no experience or knowledge of how to create a business and no resources to make it successful.

Sales is the best base for starting a business, so suck it up and get a sales job to see if you can make it. If you can’t succeed in sales at a company with an existing product, brand, marketing, etc you have zero chance of selling a your own product from scratch.

I dropped out of university, didn’t take a single relevant business course anyways.

I just started working as much as I could and saving. I wanted to travel, I ended up in Vietnam and opened a small travel company. It was basically a break even venture. I started a few other ventures there but I never had enough capital to keep things going. Had a great time though.

I moved back to canada after about 3 years. Broke. I worked a lot again, saved anything I could. Did a lot of side businesses, anything I could think of. I sold overstock for a local Rona and fixed computers and cellphones. I invested, I luckily bought two BTC for 1k each.

Eventually saved enough money, bought some equipment. Did evening and weekends.

Then one summer I quit my job, went off on my own. I still worked that winter. But when the next summer came I quit again.

Been self employed for 8 years. My gross that first summer was $20,000, last year I grossed about 500k

Anyways I found that starting slow and failing a few times sure helped me out. Working and running a business was a lot of work but gave me the safety net. I grew up poor so I don’t have much for help if I failed outright.
