The Most Advanced Warship In The Navy Is A Big FAILURE!

[Music] the performance out here has been nothing but Sensational the most expensive and technologically advanced aircraft carrier in the US Navy the USS Gerald R Ford is confronted with persistent technical issues that cast doubt on its ability to conduct operations wait what you heard it right folks it is the most expensive yet effective so why would the US Navy spend so much on a so-called warship let’s find find out but before we delve into the technical difficulties of this largest warship let’s first take a peek up close at this warship and its maiden voyage the USS Gerald R Ford a new aircraft carrier for the US Navy made her first trip to Europe on November 14th 2022 when she sailed into UK Waters the 100,000 ton ship is the biggest priciest and maybe most powerful warship ever built what’s the big deal of the design despite having a similar exterior the Ford class aircraft carriers represent a revolutionary design rather than merely an iterative evolution of the previous Nimitz class a vessel that would guarantee the US Navy retains its already significant lead in carrier development over any of its International competitors has been built by combining 23 different systems using new technologies presumably not realized at the time the decision by President George W bush and defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld to pursue such an Innovative course of action carried a significant risk both financially and technically a further $5 billion was spent on research and development bringing the total cost of the vessel excluding the aircraft to approximately $1 13.3 billion despite being formally commissioned in July 2017 the new ship didn’t achieve basic operating capab ility until December 2021 it is the completion of a 20-year Endeavor every warship even the first of its class is a prototype and many of its systems can only undergo comprehensive testing while the ship is in the sea or under construction after nearly 5 years of trying to resolve new problems with the new systems the project which was too massive to fail has finally shown a financial return on investment and labor of love with a wide margin of reserve space and power generation to absorb future ship and aircraft technology the usn now possesses the best platform on the globe generally speaking Ford can produce greater sustained aircraft sorty rates with the new design which results in a combat vessel that is safer more resilient and requires less crew and maintenance after going through a similarly traumatic experience while building the Zumwalt class destroyers the usn stated that it would never try to combine so many cuttingedge Technologies in a single new warship design a fifth ship of the class is planned and three more are currently being built the USS John F Kennedy USS Enterprise and USS Doris Miller the Ford represents the usn’s ongoing dedication to tail hook Aviation and is the First new carrier design in 40 years it is debatable if the usn will be able to replace each of its 11 carriers one for one and yet maintain a balanced force some believe that to sustain numbers the usn should take into account a more economical smaller design for about $4 billion the usn could likely construct a cabar carrier based on the Queen Elizabeth class blueprint the USS Gerald R Ford Maiden deployment on October 4th the Ford sailed from norfol with the intention of testing deep interoperability with NATO allies as well as the ship’s capability in carrier strike group operations she traveled to Halifax Canada for her first International visit before braving the harsh weather to cross the Atlantic this ship is badass a great system of systems high technology is everywhere Captain Paul lanola remarked during an interview while on board at the solent Colorado however he also mentioned that his crew has been working working particularly hard over the past year while maintaining a learning mindset toward the new technology he mentioned that the ship has so far operated well overall and that this is the first time it is being sent outside of the United States so it provides an opportunity to test the new vessel’s logistical support when questioned by a broadsheet journalist about the possibility of cheap drones as we’ve seen in Ukraine endangering his ship the captain firmly responded saying one of the things about nuclear-powered warships and this one in particular is that maneuver is to our advantage we’re not static we tend to move the ship fairly aggressively and move large distances in small periods of time I think that makes it pretty challenging for an inexpensive drone to be a challenge for me when asked if she was Battle ready the co replied there is a spectrum but we are at a high level of Readiness we still have some workups to do and are working on our way up to the very top level we most certainly could battle if given the duty tomorrow in addition to upholding peace and stability in the European region the deployment is a pledge to us allies speaking highly of his hosts he stated I really appreciate that partnership and the welcome we’ve had here the Royal Navy and Portsmouth command have really rolled out the red carpet for us and my Sailors the trend toward electrification runs through all 23 of the Revolutionary de developments due to the two nuclear reactors upgraded and more powerful designs the steam alternators can produce a peak voltage of up to 13 to 800 volts nearly three times the nimitz’s production capacity this leaves a sizable Reserve to accommodate directed energy Weaponry or more powerful sensors in the future in addition to supplying energy for the majority of the ship systems the most well-known Innovation to date has been the replacement of the steam powered catapults developed by the Royal Navy in the 1950s with the electromagnetic aircraft launch system emils the primary benefit of this technique is that launch power can be precisely estimated which reduces wear on the aircraft an average steam cat launch produces 50 knots more thrust than is really needed but the emal operator can determine the prise amount of thrust required based on the type of aircraft fuel weapon load and wind speed in the future this accuracy will be especially crucial since it will enable smaller unmanned aircraft types to use significantly less catapulting Force the captain claimed that emils gives you a strong cat shot with no question in your mind you are going flying after recently launching from his ship in an E2 Hawkeye aircraft most Pilots indicate that the Ford aircraft handles both launched takeoffs and stopped Landings a little more smoth smoothly than the Nimitz class according to assistant air officer C Dr Richard rosenbush by eliminating the need to pipe Steam from nuclear reactors condensers and water purification facilities emils also conserve space it has taken time and money to develop emails from a land-based prototype into a Dependable shipboard system but the usn is starting to see the benefits it is known that the Chinese are working on emails for their carriers though it is unclear how far along they are in terms of becoming a system that can be used in real operations two email sets including the arrestor gear will be provided by General atomics to the French for their next carrier Pang at an estimated total cost of $ 1321 billion note the cost for those who continue to support the conversion of Q carriers to full cabar form a wider variety of aircraft can be recovered because of the advanc arresting gear AAG designed for the Ford which also lessens stress loads on the airframe the rotary engines consist of basic water turbines that absorb energy and are connected to an induction motor to precisely control the arresting forces to maintain the aircraft’s center of gravity and smooth descent the two ends of the arrestor cables are fastened to separate engines and computers quickly determine the appropriate amount of stress to be given to each engine another another essential component of Ford’s Newfound power is awe it is common to underestimate the significance of the magazines and systems that Supply weapons to the flight deck even though they are an essential component of aircraft carrier architecture one of the major technical concerns that postponed the Ford’s entry into service was related to its 11 awes the ship’s weapons officer C Dr Jim fish reported that the lifts were now working like like a champ and that his technicians had not encountered any issues throughout this deployment without the need for cables or Hydraulics electromagnetic induction is used to move the lifters this makes the heavy doors that close off the elevator shafts between decks to make them blast fire and flood prooof far simpler to construct and require far less maintenance the awes can move at 150 ft per minute and are rated for loads up to 24,000 lb of ammunition this allows aircraft to be armed more quickly and safely than the nimitz’s cable lifts which have a rated capacity of 10,000 lb and 100 ft per minute as a result the sorty generation rate is significantly increased compared to the nimitz’s 140 sories a day the Ford is capable of about 160 through doors that fit beneath an aircraft Wing when open four additional small up upper stage awes transport readied weapons to the flight deck while seven lower stage awes transport weapons from the deep magazine up to the assembly areas the Ford has all Munitions prepared under cover making it significantly safer and giving the aircraft more room to maneuver while the Nimitz ammunition staging station is adjacent to the island and even with the significant investment in the aw’s most ammunition on the Ford is still handled by Hand by staff members utilizing Transportation carts in the Deep magazines the automated mechanisms of the qecc magazine which carry weapons loads from storage rooms to the lifts using a succession of rail moving moles provide an intriguing contrast to this way of thinking compared to the RN the usn possesses a significantly greater assortment of ammunition types and is not beset by a shortage of personnel the Ford’s accommodations have undergone some upgrades and sailors have commented that the food is superior than that of previous ships they have worked on however compared to Royal Navy vessels many Junior enlisted soldiers still sleep in 40-man birthing spaces with three-tier bunks and the accommodations are notably more basic twin bunks in six birth cabins and cozy mess areas with carpet and soft Furnishings are features of the junior rates on HMS Queen Elizabeth Ford’s main ship building company employs roughly 2,600 people which is about 25% fewer than the 3,500 that the nits required when Enlisted the airwing brings on an additional 2,400 Personnel from a through-life perspective the large initial outlay on automated equipment may be justified given the rising expenses of sailors pay perks and pensions during their period in service it is less certain how capable lean man battle ships like the QC would be in the event of a significant damage control scenario or how resilient they would be during an extended period of combat operations and now let’s delve into the technical challenges that limit its operational capabilities despite being outfitted with advanced technology the Ford carrier has experienced technical issues that have raised concerns among observers regarding its ability to carry out combat operations a recent study from the pentagon’s senior weapons tester states that the USS Gerald R Ford’s initial operational test and evaluation iot is anticipated to last until fiscal year 2027 the iot extension indicates ongoing reliability issues which is not good news for the Ford in all honesty Forbes stated that the USS Ford has not yet proven it can stay at sea for more than 35 days at a time without without having to make a port visit additionally it appears that the Navy is unwilling or unable to conduct even a basic series of sorty generation tests which makes it simple to draw comparisons with the Navy’s historic Nimitz class carriers it is ironic that the Ford’s sorty generation rate sgr is being hampered by technological challenges at significant financial cost the Ford was built with cuttingedge Technologies to increase the ship’s sgr compared to earlier carriers a defect in the Ford’s launch and Recovery systems which are obviously essential to the ship’s sgr has been discovered during first testing since the only function of an aircraft carrier is to launch aircraft the sgr is an essential indicator of a vessel’s overall efficacy according to Forbes with a history of broken performance promises public relations games little accountability America’s sea service has hasn’t exactly covered itself in glory during the USS Ford’s acquisition process meanwhile when the US Navy announced its budget plan for 2025 on March 11th many observers were left mystified six new Frontline warships a Virginia class attack submarine two Arley Burke class destroyers a constellation class frigate an amphibious transport Dock of the San Antonio class and a medium Landing ship are part of the two $258 billion budget request the $26 billion shopping list also includes a ballistic missile submarine and two aircraft carriers of the Gerald R Ford class both of which are partially funded $26 billion and six formidable new ships would be an incredible Boon to any other Navy however for the US Navy which is by most accounts the most formidable Fleet in the world it signifies a significant decline in ship building the goal of the US Fleet expansion has been to reach 350 warships from its current 293 because most ships only live about 30 years the Navy has to purchase 12 new ships annually on average in order to reach 350 holes and remain there roughly it needs 10 per year to maintain its current size the budget for 2025 would only cover half of the needed number We Now understand why having said that what do you think of this episode do you want more videos like this let us know
