I've been living in Europe on civilian orders for several years. I just got my next assignment, I will not be returning to Maryland, the state I left. Aside from a driver's licence and library card I have had zero connection to Maryland since 2018. I have still paid them state taxes every year, as that was the state my W2 had for withholding.

Is there a process to get back part or all of the taxes I have paid? I have not been a resident of the state or even set foot there. If I do, would I have to pay the taxes to my new state?

Posting this here since I figure Military Finance would be the most familiar with the situation, but if anyone knows a more specific sub to ask that would also be useful advice.

Can I reclaim state taxes from a state I haven’t lived in for years?

    1. In general, you remain domiciled in or a resident of the state you left when you go overseas. You’ll have to check Maryland’s tax code to see if they exempt foreign income from taxes.
