We had siding ripped off during a storm in February 2023.

We found a contractor who helped us with the claims process. We went back and forth with the insurance company regarding replacing all the siding or just the damaged side. Eventually, the insurance company agreed to replace everything.

The contractor originally tried to get our insurance to pay him directly, and we said no. So they paid us. We received the funds from insurance in April 2023.

We also agreed to pay out of pocket for new windows, as we needed it done and if they had all the siding off it was easier.

It’s now end of May 2024 and they JUST COMPLETED the siding and windows. We paid for the windows up front, but haven’t given them the insurance money for the siding yet.

My issue is they’re supposed to put on two security lights and put on new regular lights that we bought. (Agreed upon back in ya know Feb 2023) The guy who did the siding said he didn’t do lights & left when the siding is done.

Now the main contractor is calling wanting the insurance money, but I don’t feel comfortable paying him until the lights are done since it took him over a year to even start the job in the first place. Even though it’s a small thing, I feel like if we pay him we’ll never see him again.

Is it normal for a contractor to take this long? Should I pay him for the siding and just hope he comes back for the lights?

no, it is not normal. I would not pay him yet. He should’ve gotten it done last summer baring supplies being out of stock. Talk to him about the lights. Are your quotes/bids in writing? Are they “do not exceed”?

    2. This really isn’t an insurance issue. Having said that, is this contractor a contractor referred by your insurance company?

If they are your adjuster might be able to assist but ultimately this is between you and the contractor.

I would recommend continuing to reach out to the contractor and possibly escalating to a project manager or something. Half the people you deal with contractor wise especially on storm claims are just sales folks and aren’t the ones actually doing the job.
