hi everyone, i would like to know what happens if someone were to brake check me.
i just bought a new car, and im fairly new to driving manual, so i keep a generous amount of distance in case i need to shift into neutral and stop, but i have a constant fear of someone brake checking me in this instance. what would happen? i have gap insurance and a dash cam so im fairly protected, im just worried that i will have to restart all of my progress if this were to happen.

    1. Brake first clutch next, you shouldn’t be close enough for it to happen anyways, if someone is erratic get away

This is the standard insurance and legal answer, and it’s not helpful at all : It depends.

Since you have a dash cam, your chances of proving a brake check are much brighter. That’s an excellent step.

There’s not a whole lot you can do, except to get very comfortable with your manual, drive defensively, and make sure that your dash cam is on all the time.

It sounds to me like you are taking reasonable steps. I think you’re as prepared as you can be. Review your coverage and make sure you have adequate deductibles for comprehensive/collision, as well as any additional coverages such as rental. Your agent can help you with this.

    3. Don’t worry about what you can’t control. Worry about what you can control. Defensive driving will always be your best luck. Learn to drive stick better is all one can predict to you having a better future for your car.

Leave enough space is all you can do. There can be a deer that jumps in front of the car in front of you. You never know. Always have enough time to brake.

You can brake before you shift. That’s what the clutch is for.
