PCSing to London, UK in 3 weeks – was planning on selling my POV to a friend for $18,000 but he backed out at the last minute, now I’m unsure what the best option is.

Vehicle is a 2020 Jeep Cherokee in good condition, 70,000 miles. Carmax would give me $14,000 for it. Assignment is 36 months then I’ll be back stateside.

    Thoughts?

    Ship, Sell, or Store POV?

    1. There are a lot of factors at play but I wouldn’t store. It may cost money, shit will start dry rotting and getting nasty unless it’s run periodically, and imagine the depreciation after 3 years. I’d try to private party sell it for 2 weeks then sell to carmax, carvana, or a local dealership in the 3rd week. I just sold a car on FB marketplace after 10 days listed. You can try Craigslist as well.

I have never shipped but I haven’t heard good things. 2¢ worth.

Are you making payments on the jeep? If so, I’d definitely try to unload it. You can also check with a dealership besides Carmax to see what they offer.

Unless you’re really attached to this car for some reason, I’d sell it. Who knows, you may like being overseas and take another assignment.

Lots of service members store their car while overseas. As long as it’s authorized on your PCS orders, it’s free. They regularly run it to keep all the fluids moving and prevent flat spots on the tires. You can Google “pcsmypov” to get more info.

Or you can sell it and keep the money for a down payment for your next car in 3 years.

Don’t ship. UK drives on the left and the roads are small.

With 70k miles, you’re almost at the sweet spot of getting max value in terms of $ / mile for purchasing a new car and selling used.

If you want to keep the car until it dies, you can store it at no cost to you. But if you’re going to sell at 100-120k miles anyway, it’s better to cut ties now.
