Hello! My partner and I (currently unmarried, but will be later this year) are buying a house together. Through this process, we decided to shop for auto insurance in addition to homeowners so that we could be on the same policy. The local Allstate agent (Virginia) I've been using has been…well, interesting. I do plan on emailing her this morning now that I'm seeing the official policy docs, but I also don't fully trust her at the moment so I'm asking this sub as well.

I am named as the 'Named Insured' on the policy. Both vehicles (I own one, he owns the other) are listed, and my partner is under 'Listed drivers under my policy'. His name does not show up on the insurance cards, but does show up on the full policy document in the listed drivers section. What does this mean for him and his coverage under our auto policy? Is this something I need to get fixed because he effectively has different coverage than me?

Also, is there a different way I should have communicated with this agent? This has been the case through the whole process where my partner is not shown as a co-insured but is listed as 'Additional' or 'Other' on both auto and homeowners, and that was an issue with our lender as well. At one point he was listed as a 'child'.. I made it clear that we are both adults, long term partners, but currently unmarried. That said, I'm no insurance expert (clearly), so this may be how these types of policies are typically written. Thanks for any help!

Confused by new auto policy and local agent has been supremely unhelpful

    1. Not in VA but. Named Insured is insurance-speak for owner of the policy. Only a Named Insured can authorize changes on the policy. If you and your partner are each registered owners of one vehicle, you should both be Named Insureds. May be a simple mistake on the agent’s part… but not all carriers allow unmarried co- habitants to be Named Insureds on the same policy, so the agent may have intentionally done it that way to preserve a sale.

    2. States have different guidelines on what names are listed on the ID cards. Some may list the drivers, and others may only list the Named Insured(s) on it.

I work for one of the biggest carriers in the country. Within our company, in Virginia, we only have to list the Named Insureds on the ID card.

Since you’re unmarried, of course the partner is going to be listed as an “additional” or “other” on the policy.
