I’m 21 (M) and I’m facing the problem of high car insurance rates. I live with my parents and I’m currently under my family plan, paying 280$ a month for two vehicles to be insured. I did some research and when I apply for my own policy under the same company (Progressive) they are offering me 160$ a month. This is apparently because its excluding all other possible drivers in the home. I learned that they will eventually try to find if there is other drivers in your household and they will add them on if you do not. Is there any way to get around this or any other companies that don’t include them? I have no one in my house that would drive my vehicles what so ever and I’m being charged almost double just incase they do or basically the same amount if I exclude them.

Side note; I also have a motorcycle insured under Progressive by myself. Are they now going to tack on other drivers in the home even though none of them have a motorcycle license and wouldn’t even know how drive it if they wanted to?

It’s pretty typical for an insurer to require you to list all other drivers in the household on your policy. That’s because they will have regular access to your car. Your option would be to call Progressive and ask them if you would be permitted to list them as excluded drivers on your policy. But then they really couldn’t ever drive your car. If they did and there was a claim, it would be denied.

Do not conceal your living arrangements from Progressive.

Since your family and you will both have policies with Progressive, there may be some coordination of policies available.

      Check it out.

    3. I can’t think of one that doesn’t require household members to be listed. Like you mentioned, excluding will be the only way to have their driving history or whatever else from impacting your rate.
