My car has been in a shop for about two weeks now where yesterday they alerted me that it was totaled and they would be going through the next steps. But this morning I woke up to find that I was charged still even though progressive knows my car will not be driven again. Is there anything I can do to get my money back?

First, they can’t cancel your policy just because it’s totaled without your authorization. For all they know, you’re going to replace it with another car tomorrow. Second, unless it’s going to be several weeks or months, you should leave the policy in place because it will be simpler and smoother to just swap out the cars. If it’s going to be a while before you get another car, you need to cancel this policy and get a non owner policy to preserve your continuous insurance status. You don’t want a lapse as that will make your rates higher.

You still have to request the policy be canceled if that is what you want. Claims doesn’t handle policy servicing.

But you may want to look into a non owner or named operator policy. A lapse in coverage can be costly, so if you are planning on getting a new vehicle this will allow you to maintain coverage at a lower cost until you get the new vehicle.

    3. You and your car still needs to be insured, if you cancel the policy you’ll have a lapse and it will cost you probably double in premiums over the next year. Just pay your bill.
