Leaving the country and sold my car

Just sold my car to my dad. I’m leaving the country until September or October. When I come home I’ll be buying a different car from my dad and will need to get insurance again.
I want to cancel my car insurance (Geico) for the summer since I no longer own a car, but I’m worried about a lapse in coverage.. should I just keep paying it? What’s the best way to go about this? I’m in San Diego.
