My employer says they will decrease my salary 3.3$ per hour if I add my wife to the insurance package. Now I need to pay 311$ per month, plus my hourly rate dropped by 3.3$. It makes a total of $528+$622=$1150

Do you think this is fair? I want to say nothing about my rate change if I add my wife to the insurance package.

My employer decrease my salary 3.3$ per hour because I add my Wife to policy? Is it Correct?

Your pay rate should not change. Your premium for the insurance will go up as you are now covering two people. What your employer is trying to do is make you pay the company’s share of the premium.

    2. Kind of odd why they would reduce your pay rate. Are they just using that as another way to say how much it would cost?

It would cost $528 to add your wife plus your monthly cost. Typically they would just deduct the amount from your paycheck not reduce your pay rate. So are paying that + the reduction in pay?

Have you considered looking at how much it would cost to add her through either your states health exchange/federal health option through healthcare.gov marketplace? Might be cheaper and you may qualify for subsidies depending on your income.

The Affordable Care Act mandates employee and child coverage if the employer has 50+ employees. There is no mandate for spousal insurance and, with that, employers may deny spousal coverage if the spouse is eligible for insurance elsewhere or levy a surcharge to insure the spouse in addition to the plan obviously costing more.

Now *decreasing* your hourly pay is absolutely asinine. I’ve seen stuff like $30-50/paycheck, but that is nowhere near 80 hours worked for the paycheck at $3.30/hr.
