Our unoccupied car was hit and run in a parking lot. A good samaritan left a note with the license plate number and vehicle description of the offending vehicle.

We're waiting for the completed police report which the officer told us will take a couple of weeks. Apparently the other driver also later called the police and said they hit a vehicle.

The damage is confined to the driver's door. Most of the paint transfer wiped off, but there is paint damage remaining. The door is also slightly dented/wrinkled. It's hard to see, but can be felt. It's an aluminum door (Tesla Model Y) which I understand is more expensive to repair.

I'm lucky to have never filed a non-glass auto claim in 25+ years up until now, so I'm not experienced in these matters. I have a couple of questions:

    1. I'm not sure how close to my collision deductible ($1500) the estimate will be. Body shops are super backed up here, so it looks like it's going to take several weeks to get an estimate. Given that, is there any harm in waiting for an estimate before filing a claim? If the other party is uninsured I'd rather pay out of pocket if it's close to my deductible.

    2. If I do end up filing, should I file with my insurance or directly with the other party's insurance? Absent the police report, I don't yet know if the other party is insured.

Unsure how to proceed after a parking lot hit and run
