WHAT HAPPENED

    • May 18 – I found water damage in my kitchen base cabinets and immediately called a plumber.
    • May 22 – Plumber cut through drywall and found the source of the leak. It turns out the drain pipe cracked which caused the leak to drip down to the affected kitchen base cabinets. Unfortunately, mold was visible. Attempted to fix it myself by spraying distilled white vinegar daily. I was not home for 2 days and when I looked, the mold was bigger AND fuzzy!
    • June 4 – Mold remediation company gave me a quote of $5,500 for removal. They would have to demolish 4 of my kitchen base cabinets (1/3 of my kitchen) so I'd have to find a separate contractor to build it back (not sure how much this would cost). My home is on the older side so the likeliness of finding the same kitchen tiles and matching color cabinets will be difficult or almost impossible.

    MY DILEMMA

    • The deductible for my home insurance is $5,000. Is it worth it to go through insurance? I wouldn't be surprised if my premium goes up the following year but I'm scared they'll completely drop my coverage.
    • The other option is to completely remodel the kitchen, currently quoted at $15k-20k. However that's a lot of money upfront 🙁

I called my home insurance to ask questions as I wasn't sure if was covered but what I gathered was yes but they would need to have the adjustor come take a look. The rep mentioned it had to be "sudden" (it felt sudden to me lol) and to document everything. I checked my water bill usage and can show them the dates I was not home – March 30 had 0 gallons and April 13 had 1 gallon so the pipe cracked between those dates.

What would you do in this situation? Any tips or suggestions are welcomed!
