Currently 24yr old E5 in the USAR about to finish up my 6 year contract as a 74D. My civilian career has really taken off in the last year and I’ve really been struggling on whether the “commitment” of re-enlisting is still worth it.

Financially and insurance wise the USAR really doesn’t do anything for me besides pay back the 20k I have in student loans from my undergrad via SLRP. I bring in about $205k/year in salary (my wife brings in ~50k) and my rental property brings in about $23k/yr. My job still pays my salary when I’m away for AT or on TDY for a school.

If I did re-enlist, I would re-class to 37F. I guess my worry is that if my military service obligations start to overshadow my civilian work that I could be passed up for certain roles/positions plus my wife and I want to start having kids within the next 4 years.

I know it sounds like a no brainer, but I guess I’m just looking for re-assurance from people who have been successful in balancing their civilian careers and military…

Should I re-enlist in the USAR if I’m excelling at my civilian career ?

    1. What’s your civilian job? How’s the work-life balance of working 2 jobs? How’s advancement look for the civilian job? Which job do you like more?

Sounds like sticking with the civilian world is better for you and your future family, especially because, as you said, the USAR doesn’t give you much all that much.
