Hi all,

I am will be PCSing from VA to CA in November and have a few questions that I haven't been able to get satisfactory answers on. Thanks in advance for any input.

    1. As I understand, I am authorized the shipment of one POV because I’m married. Do I pay for the shipment as part of the PPM or does the government ship the vehicle for me?
    2. Do lodging costs come out of my HHG incentive pay, or are they an additional entitlement for which I am compensated above the incentive payment? Basically, am I missing out financially if I make use of my GTCC to book hotel rooms as I go rather than stay with friends where possible?
    3. Is it possible to have an authorized PPM that exceeds the authorized travel days? (i.e., I take 5 days' leave on top of my 7 days' authorized travel and arrive at my new residence after 12 days). I realize I wouldn't rate per diem and other entitlements beyond my authorized travel days, but my question is whether I can get the PPM to reflect my actual arrival date in order to allow myself the full time to submit my claim once I reach my duty station.
    4. If I use Storage-in-Transit, do I simply submit the receipts for the storage unit and expect total reimbursement? (I am on TEMINS orders to school in another state for three months before my actual move)

    1. 1. In general, the Military doesn’t ship vehicles within CONUS. If you have an adult dependent and decide to ship a second vehicle, you use your travel claim to get they would have paid for driving the vehicle. That’s currently 21 cents per mile. You will need to make all the arrangements yourself.

      2. PCS per Diem is flat rate. You get $166 per authorized day for yourself plus 50-75% of that for each dependent. You can spend (or not spend) that however you like. This has nothing to do with your PPM incentive payment.

      3. Yes. As long as you have leave days and check in by your NLT date, you’re fine. Your PPM doesn’t even have to happen at the same time that you move yourself.

I highly recommend attending the PCSing class on your installation, checking out the FAQs on the Defense Travel site, checking out the JTR, and reading up on PPMs at Military One Source or your branch specific site. It seems like you’re lumping your travel claim for personal travel and your HHGs move together when those are separate systems. Don’t forget about DLA and TLE or TLA as well.
