getting Goods around the world is getting more and more difficult delays and getting cargo delivered um in addition to the price and and delays mean you lose sales the international shipping industry facing a slew of problems all at once the chaos leading to Global shortages and Rising prices traffic jams of ships sitting offshore at some of the world’s busiest ports waiting to unload cargo workers in the US Germany and Canada are threatening to strike as they demand higher pay and better working conditions a severe drought in Central America leading to extremely low water levels in the Panama Canal it is really dramatically lengthened the time to deliver cargo which is a reduction of supply of shipping capacity and that has led to huge price increases and in the Red Sea Iranian back toothy Rebels continue their attacks on commercial ships crippling Commerce through the important Suz Canal the threat of backlogs causing some companies to advance orders to avoid shortages hitting during the end of your holidays it’s frustrating it is difficult and and at times it’s impossible you do what you need to do to get the goods in Eric devac with zenata tells us amid all of this carriers are raising rates it’s up somewhere between 300 and 400% from the beginning of the year and that is huge in December it cost around $2,000 to ship a container from Shanghai to New York now it costs $8,000 for the same container these prices are still well below the pandemic Peak but as we saw during the pandemic supply shortages and shipping backlogs are ultimately paid for by the consumer in terms of higher prices the spikes and shipping costs could threaten some of the progress the US has made recently tackling inflation this is the economy is set to be a big issue in the upcoming presidential election I’m Kayla Gaskins reporting
