    1. What does the state in question have to say about obtaining residency? If you’re intending to make this state your legal residence, why are you holding back on the other things?

    2. The most important things for you to do are (1) physically reside in the new state, and (2) abide by the new state’s requirements to adopt legal residency. Do some research for your specific state – for example, Goodfellow AFB provides a good handbook for establishing TX residency: [goodfellow.af.mil](https://www.goodfellow.af.mil/Portals/5/documents/Legal%20Office%20Documents/A%20Handbook%20for%20Establishing%20Residency%20in%20Texas.pdf?ver=4ONwl7Abrl_z3xh_QAZGKg%3D%3D)

If I was you, I would notify my previous state that I had moved & intend to establish new SLR/abandon previous SLR, cancel my voter registration in the previous state, submit a DD 2058 through my local finance office, and make sure MyPay witholding is updated. If the new state required it within a certain number of days, I would update my driver’s license and car registration (e.g. Texas requires new residents to obtain a TX driver’s license within 90 days of moving).

    3. Check state law. Most states require new residents to update their drivers license and registration within 30 to 60 days.
