I am absolutely panicking. I had a debt from a former school that I did not know that I had, because when I applied for financial aid I did get anything other than the full amount for schooling. I dropped out of the school to pursue my military career. Turned out I had a $300 debt owed to them and since the letters were going to my old address and only sending emails to the email associated with the school, I didn't notice. I got a text this morning from a debt collector and after making sure it was legitimate, I paid it off instantly. Will this affect my clearance or will I get in trouble. I am genuinely panicking.

I had a debt I didn't know about go into collection, I payed it off immediately.

    1. College-Lumpy on

You’ll be fine. I’d check your credit report and see if and how it’s reflected on there but a single small debt that went into collection by accident won’t affect you.

You could probably have settled the debt or ignored it altogether if it was past like 7 years.

    2. I’ve actually had multiple go to collections. Get used to it in the military. Providers don’t seem to know how to bill tricare, or bill wrong addresses. Just pay em off or fight em and you’ll be fine
