It seems that Reddit is heading towards disaster, and it’s only a matter of time. The decline will likely start when they roll out paid subreddits: ttps://www.theverge.com/2024/8/7/24215505/reddit-paid-subreddits-steve-huffman-q2-2024-earnings

Reddit seems to have forgotten that its rise to prominence only happened because users fled Digg after it botched its redesign and introduced paid groups. Digg was actually superior to Reddit in my opinion, but Reddit is now making the same fatal mistakes that brought Digg down.

Back in the Digg era, bots weren’t an issue. Today, Reddit is overrun with them, and the company does little to address the problem. On paper, bots may seem beneficial—lots of posts, high engagement—but it’s a false sense of user activities growth. Take this example: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/s/Rx85k2sh3T a post on r/DIY had significant engagement until I pointed out it was just a meme. I am sure that someone got upset about helping a stupid bot.
The decision to shut down Reddit’s API was another blunder.

Disclosure: I’ve never owned Reddit stock, have never placed any bets on it, and don’t plan to in the future.

Reddit is DIGGing its own grave.

    1. If Reddit does introduce paid subs, it’s definitely cooked. Users make all the content for free, and it’s a matter of time before someone comes along to make a new, free version of Reddit. You think these regards are gonna pay to see anything? ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4259)

    2. paid subs for fatherless content creators could be a thing and steal some of OF market maybe ,user get paid and reddit get their cut

    3. Is it just me, or has Reddit become a talking piece for the left? I’m neutral on the matter, but I keep on getting anti Trump/pro Kamala, and it’s driving me nuts.

They post these on forums that have nothing to do with politics, I even saw one on an animal forum. It’s driving me nuts.

I think reddit themselves have been cultivating bot accounts since at least 2012. Whole carbon copy threads used to pop up all the time with identical karma on thousands of posts, always seemed like too large an operation not to be in house. Seems like a lot of dumb-bots hit the scene around 2015 and the quality of discourse has gradually improved with the rise of gpt. This site is a public opinion generator, and jacking up api cost was a smart move that made using outside troll/click farms less of an attractive option just before they went public.

    5. After reddit became exclusive search on google, I start to get more abd more search result on threads with non google search.

Once people leave and find a better alternative, it will be hard for Reddit to entice users back. I want to see it happen though. Let there greed be their downfall.

    7. I’m a Digg refugee and I fled to Reddit after Digg started promoting sponsored content that was masquerading as user-generated.

Have you tried the Beefy-5-Layer Burrito? 5 layers of scrumptious Mexican flavors that will leave you paralyzed with pleasure.

For low prices, friendly faces, and a good time, try Taco Bell tonight.

    8. If bots could be identified they’d almost be tolerated.

But the way Reddit uses bots to steer entire conversations, especially political mentions of candidates is bordering on criminal.

The dog piling on of any mention of Conservative or Right-of -center beliefs gets met with a barrage of opposing comments and downvotes.

I think bot downvotes enough times, on enough posts by any single person is enough to either shut them down where they no longer express themselves or worse gives the impression that they don’t exist.

I worry about the younger users 15-30 who will know no social media before megamedia conglomerates pay to influence the conversations via bots.

When people speak negatively of George Soros, and pumping billions into media influence this is one of the ways.

It’s not the blatant manipulation you need to worry about, it’s the subversive and silent.

Digg CEO if you’re listening: re-implement your old design and add api support and we will all migrate to you.

    10. “Netflix will go under if they do a password crackdown and raise rates!”

Looking at this post and the RDDT chart, looking good for some calls here

    11. If we stop talking about this and let them do it we can get rich on earnings puts. If we keep pointing out how obv dumb it is they’ll walk the idea back and we don’t have a good play anymore. Shut up all.

    12. Why? Some subredddits can definitely be monetized. For instance theraceto10million.
Rich people can have their own exclusive spaces here that they already have offline.

    13. Bots have been here for at least a decade, nothing new, both in terms of hobbyists and astroturfing. Paid subs would probably annoy many, but they could potentially make money from it. RDDT isn’t too far off from a buy for me in terms of quick bounces with options, even more so if it gets to 40. Long term, idk, not that interested either way and I’ve been here for a long time. Bots or not, their last two earnings have included +284% and +170% EPS beats along with 10%+ revenue beats. Unless we get more big macro moves downward, I don’t know if I would short it for now.

Reddit has been around since 2005 and never was meant to be profitable. Yet it makes alot of profit through network traffic generating ads. asides from that they really never intended to make money in the first place and im sure they wont monetize it now because they still make boatloads of money just on advertising.

As far as stock valuation goes there might be some potential here. We don’t pay to use facebook right? But the company allow users on facebook to monetize their profiles and make money through advertising products through reels or their personal business accounts which in turn allows meta to be profitable. If reddit did something similar the stock would sky rocket.

wait till they find out a large % of the reddit interaction is actually chatgpt bots

I already hate how the algo feeds both the normal and Popular. I keep seeing 3d or 4d old stuff.

    17. I don’t think the idea of carving out a way for creators to make money is an inherently bad idea. Right now half of this site is just thots linking to some other platform where they make money. The problem I see is that Reddit management is incompetent and they’re going to fuck it up, so it will not be a good user experience, or a sustainable way for creators to make money, or a profit center for RDDT.

Fire spez and the losers that surround him, and I would say it would be a bullish strategy.

    18. Nostr fixes all of this. Nostr is early but it’s decentralized and censorship resistant social communication. The Reddit alternative apps need more work, but they’ll come along when more people want them. Check out Nostrapps.com to see what else is available on this protocol or nostr.com or nostr.how to learn more. I’d love to see more WSB content there.

    19. I think they can check quora as well. Paywall on user generated contents don’t make sense since the contents are made by the community.

    20. You overestimate the people on Reddit these days. Ten years ago, it was mostly software engineers discussing technology and making regarded memes. Now it’s communist zoomers that complain that their degree in Egyptian pottery isn’t banking them 300k a year. The climate has changed and everything is a subscription these days, so Reddit might get away with it.
