Currently an O-3 in the army and just want to cover our bases. We just got married and my wife just moved up to my current duty location so she’s not working since we will be PCSing in a few months. It’s just us and two animals, no debt, currently maxing my TSP and IRA.

I have the paperwork ready to turn in to finance for BAH and we have her DEERS appointment set to get her in the system. What else do we need to do? Like is tricare automatically updated after DEERS? Or is there anything specific we need to do to make sure she’s taken care of?

Just got married. What do we need to do next?

    1. Tricare can take 24 to 48 depending on the enrollment. It takes approximately this long once registered in DEERS. You can check on Milconnect to verify the information. There is a toll-free number in case the information doesn’t flow properly. For the DEERS appointment, please make sure your spouse brings two forms of identification and the original or certified marriage certificate. The two forms of identification can be found on CAC.mil.

It would also be beneficial to update your SGLI (if you’re wanting her as your beneficiary). Can set up FSGLI on her if you wish. This can be done via Milconnect as well

You’ve got it. Job wise if she’s interested in GS long term have her go to ACS for resume help. It’s hit or miss with ACS, but when it’s a hit that gets a competent spouse hired there are chances to excel quickly. It took us at our third assignment to find an awesome ACS rep for a conus hiring and then preference for hiring when we went oconus.
