Hi,

My new vehicle got hail damage in recently. The dents are all around the hood, luggage lid, roof and doors. There is no other visible damage. All the windshield, windows, lights are good. After the insurance appraisal, the approved repair estimate from the auto shop is about 12k CAD. (Roof, hood, luggage lid, door belt moulding will be replaced and there some labors for paint etc.). Insurance offers me two options: 1. Pay the 1000 deductible and they will send my car to the auto shop and do it for me. 2. Take the 12k CAD in a cheque as a settlement but they will never cover hail damage for the car again.

Which option would be a recommended in this case? Thanks!

    1. It’s up to you. If you want to drive around a hail damaged car and have $12k in your pocket then take the money. If you want the damage repaired then get it repaired.

    2. If you have a loan on the car, you likely are required to use the money to get it repaired. If it is paid in full, I would ask yourself “would I have paid $12k less to buy this car in its current hail damaged condition?”
