I just moved from MI to IL and today I got my car registered in IL and put the IL plates on it. By the time I got home, it was too late to call my agent (in hindsight I should have probably done this earlier). Will my insurance policy still apply to the vehicle now that it is registered in IL? My provider is auto owners and the plan was purchased while the car was registered in Michigan.

Most policy territories provide coverage anywhere in the US and Canada. You do have to call them and inform of their new address as your rates are a reflection of the risk of the area your car is garaged at (doesn’t have to actually be in a garage).

Your MI policy will not be valid in IL. You will have to obtain a new IL policy but you should have a grace period to do so, depending on the carrier (10-30 days). You’ll want to contact them Monday morning to make the switch.
