When filling out the application for a quote, progressive asks me to enter my spouse's U.S. License Type. Since she doesn't have a license, I picked Not Licensed/State ID. Then there was an error that said "A rated driver must be licensed". What do you think I should do? Thank you all in advance!

Progressive wants to include my wife on my car insurance even though she doesn't have a driver's license?

    1. It sounds like the system is trying to rate your wife as a driver when she should be ‘Excluded’ or ‘Not Rated’ .. if you can choose ‘Excluded’ and put that she is not licensed I would imagine it will let you continue. If not, call them up and have someone help you because your unlicensed wife is obviously not a driver and it sounds like an issue with their quoting system.

    2. One of the largest gaps when insurance companies look at how much they charge vs how much they should charge based on the actual risk is hidden drivers who are left off of policies. So companies have gotten very aggressive in using third party data from Lexis Nexus and other vendors to check who may be living at an address and having the drivers added, often automatically. If she is not ever going to drive – you can exclude her. But if she drives there would not be coverage for her.

    3. You have to put her down, and then choose to not insure her. There will be an option for that. Depending on the state, it will either say she is excluded or List Only.

    4. You have to choose to exclude or not insure her. If you can’t find the option you can call them up.

    5. She would still be a defendant in a lawsuit if something were to happen. If you are at fault in a bad accident, you both will need defense to protect both of your assets.
INAL but I wouldn’t want anything that might create an exposure. I’m sure it depends on your state and the way you structure your wealth.

I had to do something similar for a motorcycle. My wife has a drivers license but no motorcycle license.

    7. In pretty much every state with progressive, and a lot more companies now, you have to list every household member of driving age on a policy, some states give you the option to exclude them and you can put the reason as no license/never licensed and they will be excluded as a driver.

HOWEVER, they will still most likely be rated in some way, not usually the same rating as a driver, and in some states they might not be.

But your wife is someone of legal driving age and in insurance terms is a “risk”. One of the leading things with autos is people who attempt to hide drivers to get a better rate so most companies are really starting to crack down on it.
