Stationed at Cp. Pendleton for one year in 2021. Never established residency. My state of residence for tax purposes is Washington and has been since 2017. That is reflected on my LES.
Yesterday got a letter from the State of California franchise tax board telling me I owe an outrageous amount of money in unpaid income tax from 2021.
I know the answer is to file a protest and not to pay any money. Just looking for a sanity check here please. What could I send them? LES from 2021?
Secondary lesson – don't ever live in California.
