Was rear ended and other party’s insurance admitted fault. Received a check from other party’s insurance for the exact amount of the repair estimate they sent. Taking the car to an auto body shop of my choice this week.

    1) Check is just made out to me. When should I give this to the body shop?

    2) What happens if then actual repair is more than what the check was written out to?

Located in California if that’s needed. First time dealing with insurance and want to make sure I’m not missing anything. Thanks!

    1. 1. You generally give the check to the body shop upon completion of repairs. Some smaller body shops may require a partial payment so they could order parts and then the rest on completion of work.

      2. The body shop would submit a supplemental estimate to the other party’s insurance for approval. Once approved, the body shop will continue the work. Any supplemental payments are paid from the insurance company to the body shop directly.
