Thoughts on opening a Montana LLC to get your vehicles permanently registered? This would also have the benefit of allowing you to purchase automobiles tax free. Has anyone thought about this? It seems like it would be even easier for service members since if anyone tried to give us grief, we would have the added benefit of being on orders out of state.

The rich use this loophole to get out of paying tax on luxury vehicles and RV’s. Other states are “cracking down” on the use of avoiding taxes on luxury purchases. I currently have two cars registered in another state and have them insured in my home state. So I’m already doing something similar to this but not in Montana and not with permanent registration.

Wanted to see what the community thought.

Just because it’s legal in Montana doesn’t make it legal in the state you’re stationed in. Each state has different rules about out of state vehicles and likewise another layer of rules about military members whose HOR is somewhere else. It would really depend where you’re stationed whether it’s worth doing this or not.

Likewise, you need to insure them wherever they’re garaged so that won’t change in this situation. See way too many people in the military get stationed in a high insurance cost place like CA and think they can just keep their car insured in the small town their parents live in. Works right up until the point you need to file a claim which will be promptly denied.
