A FEMA-declared windstorm damaged the roof and took off some shingles. I ended up replacing it for about $8.5K. My deductible is $5K. I have 1 claim within the past 3 year period. My renewal rates did go up, but it is the general rate increase that everyone typically gets.

Should I file a roof claim after getting it done already?
    I'll basically get $3500 back.

    1. Not unless you want to risk being dropped. A claim of that size is not worth it. If you’re non-renewed, it will be difficult and much more expensive to find new coverage.

    2. If you already replaced it, I wouldn’t worry about it. Insurance companies are quick to non-renew nowadays for certain types and sizes of claims. You already have one on your record in 3 years so a second would be a good chance they’d non-renew at the end of this term.

At the very least, I’d contact your insurance company and tell them you just replaced the roof and give them proof if they ask for it (invoice or completed work order usually works w/ photos). Depending on how old the previous roof was, you may get a premium discount for a newer one. It’ll also reset their clock on your roof age.

    3. No. This is a fast track to not only get dropped from your current insurance but to also be denied by most of the others. 2 claims in 3 years is a death sentence right now. Especially for 3500 dollars over a roof that is already fixed.

You didn’t allow the insurance company to inspect. If you filed a claim there is a very strong chance it will be denied because you didn’t follow the policy conditions and allow them to see the damages

    5. Don’t claim it – you didn’t even give the insurer a chance to view the damage. But, let your insurer know that you now have a new roof. That could make your insurance cost go down.
