I currently have USAA and recently found out I've been paying way too much. I have home and car insurance (FC). My home does have a pool so I'm sure that doesn't help. Right now I am paying almost $700 a month. I know I know I'm crazy BUT theres a little backstory… my husband had USAA for car insurance when we got married in 2010. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and although the navy kept him on as active duty they gave him the option to go to work if he felt well enough but didn't have to. He always went until he physically couldn't and the navy told us we could move back home (or wherever) so we did that, bought a house but he started to deteriorate quickly. He died in our new home a week after we closed.

I was obviously devastated and not really able to make all the phone calls or arrangements that come with losing a spouse AND buying a home so I did the spouse stuff and my mom did the house stuff. I remember her talking to USAA about adding the house and her giving them the details and everything. I'm not blaming her but I had never bought a house before so I had no idea what was and wasn't a normal price for insurance. I noticed they were taking out $300 something every month so I guess I just figured that's what it was. I recently noticed they are taking that out twice a month and there's just no way I can afford that.

Any suggestions for good but affordable insurance? TIA

Firstly, I’m sorry for your loss. You have my deepest condolences.

The best way to find the most competitive rate is to pull multiple quotes from both independent and captive insurance agents.

So sorry, that’s devastating for you..

USAA used to be the gold standard, now they are outrageously expensive. Who is the best carrier for you is really going to depend on your state and specific situation. Generally speaking, JD Power and associates annual insurance survey helps to determine which carriers are the best, around my area, Cincinnati and Erie are great carriers, but they can be picky. Credit, where you live, claims, age of roof, other factors play into who is best for you.
