Hello, I’m 22M, she is 21F! Because we are so young, I’m currently under my parents insurance and she is under her parents insurance. I bought her a Tesla but now I wonder how the insurance will play out. Do I need to add her to the same policy I’m? ( I’m just a driver on that policy not even the second named insured) or is it okay for her to have the car and herself in her parents policy? Thank you so much I’m pretty lost lol

I’m the registered owner of my wife’s car, does I need to be on her insurance?

    1. Probably, but it depends on the carrier and state. Give the insurance company a call and they’ll confirm!

    2. There is a chance you will need your own policy OR that she will have to be added to your insurance if she is the one driving it.

Do you guys live together? Do you still live with your parents?

    3. Unless the parents own the car’s that you’re driving you need to have your own policy. And yes, since you’re married and live together, you need to be rated on each other’s policies, tho having one policy for both will likely be cheaper.

Yes you would need to be on that policy. But it sounds like you already are. Listed drivers are considered insureds under the policy.

The other concern would be that you are currently married and you and your spouse are insured under your parents policies while not(?) living with them? So if there are discrepancies with your residential address or the garaging address of the vehicles, a claim could be denied due to misrepresentation of risk information. Also, since you are married, and you are listed on your parents policy, they would most likely want her to be rated on that policy as well

auto insurance is not like health insurance — you don’t just get to stay on your parents’ policy until you reach a certain age

    6. Right now, you are in a very sticky situation. If either of you is in a car accident, it will be very likely that they will deny coverage. You are both misrepresenting pertinent information to the ins company. You are giving them a great reason to deny coverage.

You both need to update your policies to reflect your CURRENT address and drivers. You should also expect a significant price increase, as you are both under 25 plus the tesla.
