I have just hit my 6th year in the Army. I am looking to transfer my education benefits to my spouse and two daughters.

I have a couple of questions:

    1. The ADSO, I am already signed until 2029 ( I did another 5-year re-enlistment) Does this cover the 4-year ADSO or will I need to re-up for an additional 4 years (In total I'd be in for another 9 years)?

    2. When transferring the benefits, I've heard that you give 1 month to your children as you can go back later and change the months, or is it best to allot them what you know they're going to get anyways?

    Thank you guys.

    1. 1. Yes, the service obligation is served concurrently with any other obligations – you will complete the GI Bill transfer obligation in 2028 with no effect on your 5-year obligation until 2029.

      2. Yes, transfer 1 month to at least 1 dependent as soon as possible to officially start the 4 year clock. Also, yes, transfer at least 1 month to every dependent that could possibly use the benefits (including spouse) – you can revoke and reallocate benefits after separating, but you can NOT add benefits to a dependent who never previously had any. Makes no difference whether you hold the remaining months in reserve or take a shot at a fair distribution now – reallocating later will not affect your service obligation/ability to separate.
