I recently just had a hit and run happen to me (like literally 20 mins ago) when I was coming home from work. I was pulling into my apartment complex and some car that I’ve not seen before around was either under the influence or something and was driving extremely reckless and was reversing and not at all paying attention. He almost hit an elderly man that was sitting outside and then he reversed into my front bumper and then sped off and did not stop. I didn’t even realize he hit me until I parked into my apartments and checked. He scraped my front bumper badly. I REALLY do not wanna call my insurance and do a hit and run claim because I know they will fault me for it and raise my premium. It happened so fast, I don’t even know the car. I just know the color and a I think it was a Chevy Malibu but that’s it. Should I call the cops? If I do… doesn’t that notify my insurance company? I’m just stressed right now and I don’t know what I need to do. I’ve never had a hit and run happen so I don’t know what steps to take. Ugh FML

What do I do about a hit and run?

    1. Call the cops and ask your apartment if you can look at camera footage so you can get its license plate. If you can get its plate number, you can look up who the plate is registered to and report it to his insurance that way. No, calling the cops and reporting a crime does not report to your insurance unless you inform your insurance yourself.

    2. > I know they will fault me for it

why do you think this? if your assertion is that the other party backed into you and there is no evidence proving otherwise, they would not find you to be at fault

Your insurance covers hit and runs, and it doesn’t affect your premium. Get a police report and talk to your insurance rep before opening a claim. But it doesn’t count as at fault if it’s a hit and run.

    4. Hit n run is a felony call the cops immediately and ask the surrounding business/resident if they got camera footage
