Active Duty AF -14.5 years. My wife and I are about to have a baby and transfer the GI BILL to my kid. I heard a rumor that I can transfer a small percentage and then later vary the percentages. Is this true?

Also, this is my first child so after I have a 4 year service commitment from the time of transfer. If I later have a second child will that incur another 4 years service commitment from the time of that transfer? I don't want to stay in too long after 20 years.

Thank you, I called various VA numbers and talked with the education office on base. All gave me different answers and referred me elsewhere. :/

You start the clock the first time you allocate months to a dependent. I recommend you transfer some to your wife now to start it, then as subsequent babies are born you can do the same for them (without restarting the 4yr adso). You can always change the number of months each person has, but you can’t add a new recipient after you get out.

    2. Transferring to the first dependent starts your 4 year commitment and there is no additional service for later transferring to more dependents. I would go transfer 1 month to your spouse today to start the process and add the kid(s) later as they are registered in DEERS.

You can reallocate the number of months at any time while in or out of service. You can’t add additional dependents after you separate/retire.
