Hello,

    IL & State Farm

I bought my first home which I've owned for about 4 years now and have never had an insurance claim before. A few days ago i discovered a water leak in a closet i dont use. Found the source of the leak, there was a bullet hole (if you can believe that, which ive been told isnt super uncommon) in my roof directly above that closet. Luckily for me, that closet had a hole drilled in the ceiling so that a coaxial cable could be fed from the attic into that room. All the water from the leak went down the cord into the closet, instead of pooling in the attic. I fixed the hole in the roof, and started looking at the water damage. I peeled some of the paint back around the hole in the closet and saw black mold. I immediately panicked, called my parents and a friend who all said to call insurance, as you dont want to wait around for these things (ive learned this was a HUGE mistake). I called insurance and started a claim saying i think i have mold from a water leak into my closet. They told me to upload pictures and find a contractor who could assess the damage. The next day i decided to start doing more investigating before forking out money for a contractor and a deductible. Turns out there was only mold on a 3inch x 3inch area around that hole in the ceiling of the closet. No mold or water damage in the attic, and no mold or water damage anywhere else in the closet or bedroom. I called insurance right away to withdraw the claim. Told them i panicked when starting the claim, and there was no mold and just some water stains in a tiny area, and that i didnt know what mold looked like. The person i talked to said that this is the best case scenario possible, since there was no payout, no assessment, no one came out, it was opened and withdrawn in less than 24 hours, and the claim is being put as "Records Only".

Will this have negative consequences down the road? My policy just renewed a month ago, and ive never called insurance for anything before.

    Thanks

Will a 0$ claim increase my rates?
