There’s reason behind it that I don’t want to type out, long story short…found out 6 week ago my license plate is expired, i bought the car from my dad and I guess things didn’t transfer properly. My car insurance just lapped 2 weeks ago, I was a little tight on money. Do I fix the tag issue or get insurance reinstated first?

Both are extremely important but get the tag fixed as an insurance doesn’t cover incidents that happen while committing a crime(which would be driving with expired registration).
