I am licensed driver in CA. I owned a car that was insured with USAA but it was lost in a comprehensive incident (someone burned a pile of garbage near it and the fire totaled my car) back in 2021.

My live-in girlfriend and I want to make sure I am correctly insured to drive her auto. She is currently insured through Progressive. I am also looking to be the primary driver of a 2nd vehicle that her family owns but no one has used for a few years.

    I am m35+ and she is f30+

What is likely our best option here? Our priority being: affordable and good bang-for-your-buck coverage. With the end goal being me insured for both autos and her insured for her auto.

    Thanks!

Consider getting a policy that allows for multiple vehicles under one plan. Look into Progressive’s multi-car discounts since you’re already familiar with their coverage. This could offer you and your girlfriend good coverage at a better rate.

    2. I assume you live together. If so, as a member of her household, she MUST list you as an occasional operator of her car and pay the appropriate rate. Shouldn’t be much as long as you meet the company’s underwriting requirement. Failing to list you on her policy is concealment of a material underwriting fact and she is already risking having claims denied and her policy rescinded.

As for driving the family’s car, as long as they own it, the same thing applies. If you drive it regularly and you are the only driver you MUST be listed on their policy as a full-time operator and they would have to pay the appropriate. Again, failing to list you on their policy is concealment of a material underwriting fact and they risk having claims denied and their policy rescinded.

Car insurance in CA is hard to get and expensive. The best advice I can give you is to have the family sign over that car to her. As the owner of both cars, she can assign you as full-time operator of the car you drive. The advantage being that you’ll get a multicar discount and whatever discounts she has already earned.
